Our Story

Bere Sericulture Production PLC (Bere Har) was founded in Arba Minch, Ethiopia by Geleta Hailu, whose journey began with curiosity and vision. After hearing about silkworms on the radio, he became interested in silk production and its business potential something entirely new in Ethiopia at the time. Determined to pursue this idea, he took training and began small-scale production from his home.

As his experience grew, he expanded production and later received support from the government to establish a workspace in Arba Minch. Together with his brother, he developed the initiative under the name “Arba Minch Har.” As the business continued to grow and evolve, it was later renamed Bere Har, reflecting its broader vision and development into a larger enterprise.

A major turning point came when Geleta Hailu sent his son, Besufikad Geleta, to study Textile Engineering at Bahir Dar University. While still studying, Besufikad became actively involved in the business and began introducing natural dyeing, fabric development, and garment production. Before this, the company focused only on producing and selling cocoons and silk yarn. Through his contribution, Bere Har evolved into a fully integrated “farm to fashion” company.

Today, Bere Har is a pioneer in Ethiopia’s silk sector, managing the entire value chain from sericulture to finished products. The company produces high-quality handcrafted textiles including scarves, shawls, and garments, positioning itself as a luxury brand rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.

Bere Har works closely with outgrower farmers and local communities, creating sustainable livelihoods and empowering women and youth. By supporting skill development and inclusive production, the company strengthens both tradition and economic opportunity. Currently, Bere Har employs more than 60 people directly, while also engaging many more through its outgrower network.

Bere Har continues to grow as a symbol of Ethiopian excellence—blending tradition with modern design while ensuring that the country’s silk industry thrives for future generations. Today, Bere Har stands as a center of excellence in silk, leading innovation, quality, and sustainable production in Ethiopia.
